Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin is a vibrant Fruit Beer that masterfully integrates the tart, zesty essence of fresh grapefruit into its classic American IPA base. The sensory experience is led by an explosive aromatic profile of citrus pith and resinous pine, derived from a heavy-handed hop schedule and fresh fruit addition. On the palate, the bright acidity of the grapefruit enhances the beer’s natural citrusy hop character, supported by a lean, bready malt foundation. A firm, clean bitterness cuts through the fruit’s juice-like qualities, culminating in a crisp, dry finish that reinforces its reputation as a refreshing yet bold West Coast classic.

Appearance. Deep gold to light copper (7-9 SRM). Brilliant clarity with a large, white, persistent head that leaves significant lacing on the glass.

Aroma. High intensity of fresh grapefruit zest and peel. Notable hop-derived citrus and resinous pine notes. Low bready malt support; fermentation is clean with no esters or diacetyl.

Taste. The initial impression is a burst of tart grapefruit. Significant hop bitterness is present, balanced by a neutral, crackery malt flavor. Hop flavors of pine and citrus zest are prominent. The finish is very dry and clean with a lingering, pithy bitterness and a hint of grapefruit acidity.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, crisp texture. Moderate to high carbonation provides a refreshing prickle. A subtle, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present without being harsh.
