Augustijn Grand Cru
This Belgian Tripel pours a bright straw-gold with a voluminous, rocky white head, characteristic of its bottle conditioning. The sensory profile is dominated by a complex interplay of spicy, peppery phenols and vibrant citrus esters reminiscent of orange peel. While brewed with a base of Pilsner malt that provides a soft, honey-like sweetness, the finish is remarkably dry and crisp. Distinctive floral and spicy hop notes provide a firm bitterness that balances the 9% ABV, which remains deceptively smooth. It is a full-bodied yet effervescent ale where the yeast-driven spice and hop-forward character define its elegant, grand cru stature.
Appearance. Deep straw to pale gold (5-7 SRM). Exceptional clarity with an effervescent rise of fine bubbles. Dense, rocky white head with excellent retention and thick, clumpy Belgian lacing.
Aroma. High intensity. Complex bouquet of spicy, peppery phenols and moderate fruity esters suggestive of lemon and orange. Low floral and perfumy hop character. Light, grainy-sweet Pilsner malt foundation with a soft, clean alcoholic presence that is integrated rather than sharp.
Taste. Initial impression of soft, grainy malt sweetness followed by a wave of peppery phenols and citrusy esters. Firm bitterness emerges mid-palate, leading to a very dry, clean finish. Aftertaste is lingering with a mix of spicy yeast character and floral hop notes. Complexity is high, showing no syrupy sweetness despite the strength.
Mouthfeel. Medium body, feeling lighter than the gravity suggests due to high attenuation. High carbonation creates a lively, effervescent, and prickly sensation on the tongue. Alcohol provides a subtle, well-integrated warmth without being hot or fusel.
