This Imperial Stout, a collaboration between Arbor Ales and Emperor’s Brewery, delivers a decadent sensory experience inspired by the Walnut Whip. The profile is anchored by a rich foundation of Barley, Wheat, and Oats, which provide a dense, structural complexity. Intense aromas of bittersweet chocolate and espresso are elevated by the earthy, toasted character of walnuts and the creamy sweetness of lactose. Barrel aging introduces sophisticated layers of vanilla and oak, which harmonize with the 10% ABV to create a smooth, integrated warmth. The palate is luscious and chewy, balancing deep roasted malts with a lingering, dessert-like finish that remains sophisticated and multi-dimensional.

Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (SRM 40+). It features a thick, creamy, deep tan head with moderate retention that leaves oily legs and dense lacing on the glass, indicative of its high viscosity.

Aroma. High intensity with a rich, complex blend of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and charred grain. Distinctive notes of toasted walnuts and vanilla-scented oak from the barrel aging are prominent. Subtle esters of dried plums and figs emerge as it warms, supported by a sweet, milk-like creaminess.

Taste. An initial impression of intense cocoa and molasses is quickly followed by a savory, nutty depth. The malt character is dominated by roasted grain and dark chocolate, balanced by a moderate hop bitterness and wood-derived tannins. Lactose provides a smooth, sweet counterpoint to the charred malt bitterness. The finish is long and warming, with a lingering aftertaste of roasted nuts and espresso.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture provided by the oats and wheat. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the beer's weight. A smooth, gentle alcohol warmth is present throughout without being sharp or solventy.

ARBOR ALES - Arbor Ales have been brewing beer in the fine city of Bristol since early 2007. From their site in Easton, the team currently brews and packages in excess of one and a half million pints a year. That’s pints, full pints and nothing but pints (apart from the odd 440ml can, but they don’t talk about those). Never shying away from trying out new ideas, they have an extensive back catalogue of recipes covering a vast array of styles and ABV’s. Though all different in their own way, the recipes were all born out of a desire to make beer that Arbor are proud of and importantly, that they really want to drink themselves.
