Anchor Coffee Porter is a robust sensory experience born from the marriage of a legendary recipe and Four Barrel flash-chilled coffee. A grain bill featuring 2-Row Pale, Caramel, Black, and Wheat malts constructs a foundation of baker's chocolate, toasted nuts, and subtle baking spices. The addition of specialty coffee introduces intense, high-toned aromatics of fresh-ground beans and dark fruit. Apollo hops provide a clean, resinous bitterness that balances the inherent malt sweetness. This American Porter pours nearly opaque with ruby highlights, delivering a smooth, velvety texture and a finish defined by lingering espresso and rich, dark-roasted grain.
Appearance. Very dark brown to nearly black in color (SRM 35-40) with deep garnet or ruby highlights when held to the light. It features a dense, creamy, tan-colored head with excellent retention and significant lacing.
Aroma. High intensity of fresh-roasted coffee dominates, supported by a rich malt profile of dark chocolate, cocoa, and lightly burnt grain. Low resinous or earthy hop character from the Apollo hops is present in the background. Subtle notes of toasted nuts and caramel are apparent, with a clean fermentation profile and no harsh acridity.
Taste. Initial impression is a bold surge of espresso and dark chocolate. The malt flavor is moderately strong, characterized by roasted grain and a nutty sweetness derived from the Caramel and Wheat malts. Bitterness is medium-high, provided by both the dark malts and Apollo hops, leading to a dry to off-dry finish. Complex layers of spice and dark fruit emerge as it warms, with a clean, lingering coffee aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a noticeable creaminess and smooth texture enhanced by the wheat addition. Carbonation is moderate. A light, pleasant alcohol warmth is present, reflecting its 6.7% strength, without any harsh astringency from the roasted grains.
