Heartless Bastards is a decadent English Barley Wine that highlights a sophisticated interplay between heritage malts and traditional hops. A sturdy base of Maris Otter provides a deep, bready foundation, while the addition of Simpsons Double Roast Crystal introduces intense, layered notes of rich caramel and sun-dried raisins without any roasty bitterness. The East Kent Goldings hops contribute essential earthy, floral, and marmalade-like nuances that provide a subtle counterpoint to the malt's dominance. Despite using a clean California-Ale yeast, the beer develops a complex, fruity depth. It is a full-bodied, velvety sipper that concludes with a smooth, lingering warmth and a refined, sweet finish.

Appearance. Deep copper to dark mahogany in color (SRM 18–22) with brilliant clarity and visible ruby highlights. It carries a low, creamy, off-white head with moderate retention, leaving a light coating of lacing and visible legs on the glass due to high viscosity.

Aroma. High intensity and richly malty, featuring deep aromas of toasted bread, English toffee, and dark caramel. Pronounced dark fruit notes of raisins and dried figs are present. The hop aroma is moderate, displaying classic earthy, tea-like, and slightly floral characteristics, complemented by a soft, rounded alcohol warmth.

Taste. The initial impression is one of high malty sweetness, offering complex layers of biscuit, toffee, and burnt sugar. The mid-palate is saturated with dark fruit flavors like plum and raisin. Hop bitterness is moderate, sufficient to balance the massive malt bill, with earthy and marmalade hop flavors appearing toward the finish. The aftertaste is long and moderately sweet, with a well-integrated, warming alcohol presence.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the rich mouth-coating sensation. A smooth, pleasant alcohol warmth is evident but never harsh or burning.
