Drakul is an imposing Imperial Stout that pours with the gravitas of a Transylvanian legend. This collaboration between Amager Bryghus and Blackout Brewing delivers a rich and nutritious sensory experience, dominated by an intense roasted profile. The initial impact is a decadent blend of bittersweet chocolate and espresso, followed by deep layers of black licorice and molasses. Dark fruit esters of prunes and dried figs provide a complex sweetness that balances the aggressive bitterness typical of the style. The 11% ABV manifests as a smooth, well-integrated warmth that lingers alongside a velvety, viscous finish, making it a truly formidable and satisfying sipper.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40 SRM). Pours with a thick, dense, deep tan head that shows moderate retention and leaves significant lacing. Visible viscosity is apparent through slow-moving legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of heavily roasted grain, dark chocolate, and charred coffee beans. Moderate esters suggest dried plum and black currant. Very low earthy hop aroma is buried beneath the malt. A clean, noticeable alcohol warmth is present but not sharp.
Taste. Intense and multifaceted initial impression of burnt grain and dark cocoa. The mid-palate reveals layers of toasted malt, molasses, and dark fruit leather. Bitterness is firm and high, providing necessary balance to the massive malt backbone. The finish is moderately dry with a lingering aftertaste of roasted coffee and smooth alcohol warmth.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the beer's weight. A gentle, creeping warmth from the high alcohol content is present without being solventy or harsh.
