This barrel-aged Old Ale presents a masterful study in maturation, having spent nineteen months in a complex blend of oak, brandy, and red wine barrels. The sensory profile is dominated by rich, vinous layers of Cabernet Sauvignon and the dark fruit depth of Fetească Neagră, seamlessly integrated with the spiritous warmth of brandy. Expect a decadent malt backbone featuring notes of molasses and treacle, accented by the structural tannins of local Bihor oak. Its extended bottle conditioning has refined the profile, resulting in a sophisticated balance of oxidative sherry-like notes and lush, dried fruit esters, delivering an experience of profound depth and warming complexity.
Appearance. Deep mahogany with ruby highlights; clear with a slight oily sheen from high alcohol. Pours with a thin, creamy, light tan head that shows limited retention, common for long-aged ales.
Aroma. High intensity and deeply complex. Pronounced aromas of dark raisins, figs, and prunes are layered over a base of rich caramel and treacle. Distinctive vinous notes from Cabernet Sauvignon barrels provide a red wine bouquet, complemented by the sharp, spiritous warmth of brandy and sweet vanilla oak.
Taste. The initial impression is a luscious wave of malty sweetness, reminiscent of molasses and toffee. This is quickly met by a complex fruitiness of blackcurrant and dark cherry from the Fetească Neagră influence. The mid-palate reveals oak tannins and a warming brandy character. Bitterness is moderate but serves only to balance the rich malts, leading to a long, vinous finish with lingering notes of aged Port.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and chewy with a rich, viscous texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, providing just enough lift to the heavy frame. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present throughout, accompanied by a light, pleasant astringency from the nineteen months in oak barrels.
