Il nome di questa premium lager belga, Stella Artois, è nato nel Natale del 1926 per celebrare la rinascita della birreria, seriamente danneggiata durante la prima Guerra Mondiale. Un lieto evento, quindi, sottolineato da un nome decisamente benaugurante! E fortunato è stato anche il risultato, perché Stella Artois è una premium lager deliziosa, piacevolmente dissetante e fresca nell’aroma. Tutto merito dell'alta qualità degli ingredienti: acqua purissima, malto e luppolo provenienti dalla "culla" della birra (l’Europa centrale), lievito selezionato con cura e grano non maltato (che rende più luminosa e leggera la birra).
Una volta stappata, Stella Artois produce una schiuma ricca e persistente, che sale rapida alla sommità del calice. Al naso propone i tipici aromi delle premium lager: erba appena tagliata e mollica di pane fresco. Al primo sorso, il gusto fresco e piacevolmente luppolato della Stella Artois è penalizzato dall’effervescenza esuberante. Ma con un po’ di pazienza l’eccesso di vivacità scompare lasciandoci gustare il perfetto equilibrio di questa grande premium lager.
Stella Artois sviluppa una gradazione alcolica di 5,2 % vol. e va servita nel calice a tulipano, a una temperatura di 5° C. In tavola è consigliata con insaccati e in genere con pietanze a base di maiale. I più raffinati suggeriscono l’abbinamento con il coniglio alle prugne o con un’insalata belga, con patate e pancetta.

La birreria Artois di Leuven è di antichissime origini. Fondata come birreria Den Horen nel lontano 1366, venne acquistata dal mastro birraio Sebastian Artois nel 1717. E di conseguenza mutò il nome in Artois. Dal 1987 la birreria fa parte del colosso belga Interbrew, di proprietà di Piedboeuf, il primo produttore di birra in Belgio.
