The collectable label on Samuel Smith’s Winter Welcome Ale this year features a brass quintet playing carols.
Brass bands originated between the 1830s and 1850s, they were associated with the coal mining and other industrial communities in northern England. Some early bands were formed in the 1810s by military veterans returning from the Napoleonic wars.
Despite the closure of the coal mines in the 1980s, brass bands continue strongly in Yorkshire and bind its community together. The world’s most famous brass bands herald from Yorkshire. The sound of a brass band playing Christmas carols or a brass ensemble busking in the street is a strong winter association for many Yorkshire folk.
This seasonal beer is a limited edition brewed for the short days and long nights of winter. The full body resulting from fermentation in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ and the luxurious malt character, which will appeal to a broad range of drinkers, is balanced against whole-dried Fuggle and Golding hops with nuances and complexities that should be contemplated before an open fire.

Throughout history, beer of somewhat higher alcohol and richness has been enjoyed for the winter holidays, when old friends get together to enjoy the season. Wassail is a festival to celebrate winter and the beer that goes with it.
Samuel Smith’s Winter Welcome is vintage-dated with a special label each year, and was first shipped to the US in 1990 – it was the first imported winter seasonal beer.

Cerveza variante de la SAMICHLAUSS CLASSIC, muy fuerte y con mucho cuerpo, alcohólica (14º de alcohol), de baja fermentación. Gusto dulce y maltoso, con notas de coñac. Aromas dulces, tostados y evocan el coñac. Sorbo maltoso y seco, con notas de caramelo, frutos secos y coñac. De final seco. Para beber y disfrutar poco o poco .
Maridaje: especialmente recomendada copo copa de sobremesa y con dulces navideños.
Curiosidad: con un proceso de producción que se inicia todos los años el 6 de Diciembre (día de San Nicolás), largo y costoso, requiere almacenamiento por diez meses en la bodega. Lo que le lleva además a la excepcional cualidad de que puede estar muchos años en la botella sin perder sus cualidades o incluso mejorando. De baja fermentación, en un proceso realmente sorprendente para una cerveza que llega a alcanzar los 14º de alcohol, pues con las levaduras habituales difícilmente se puede llegar a esta graduación, por lo que ha sido preciso encontrar levaduras especiales que lo hagan posible.
