Kwak is a full-bodied Belgian Specialty Ale. Amber in color with beautiful foam and slightly sweet, seductive malt character. Rich, satisfying Belgian experience. Brewed by Bosteels Brewery in the Flanders village of Buggenhout, Kwak is almost as famous for it’s iconic glassware as the classic beer itself. Always served in it’s round-bottomed and hour-glass shaped, it resembles a stirrup cup or ‘yard of ale’, held upright in a wooden stand. Kwak is recognisable by its deep bright amber colour and a dense, creamy coloured head, as well as distinctive glass and wooden glass holder. A malty aroma and a slightly spicy character (think coriander and hops), very mellow with a fruity attack and a slightly spicy character; hints of liquorice passing into a warm finish that reminds you of caramelised banana.

There is a subtle aroma of banana, pineapple and mango. It’s best served between 5-6 degrees celsius.Not only is the Kwak beer delicious, but its glass makes an interesting talking point too! It looks like a mini-yard of ale and due to having a rounded bottom, comes with a wooden stand. Apparently Pauwel Kwak designed the glass during the 19th century for coachmen who wanted a drink but couldn’t leave their coach, although it wasn’t launched until the 1980s.Kwak has won various beer awards, which comes as no surprise! At the Brussels Beer Challenge 2018, it was awarded a certificate of excellence for the category of Pale and Amber Ale. Their high quality beers are a result of years of practice and a bit of inspiration from the right places.Pauwel Kwak was a brewer in the 18th century, who brewed his own dark beer for his coaching inn in the Dendermonde region of Belgium. At the time, Napoleonic rule meant coach drivers were unable to leave their coach to drink with passengers, so Pauwel quickly solved the problem, creating a unique glass and stand that could be attached to the carriage for the drivers, so they could enjoy the beer too. Such perseverance to fulfil a person’s right to a beer was deemed worthy by the brewers at Bosteels, who have brewed Pauwel Kwak in tribute since the 1980’s.It is a fairly simple brew in comparison to the bigger Belgian beers, with just a few key ingredients making this a world class beer. Barley, water, wheat, hops and sugar combine in harmony to create a deep amber coloured beer with a thick head. The aroma is that of earthy malts, herbs and fruits, with hints of liquorice and spicy hop bitterness on the palate and a caramel and banana finish. Naturally, it should be served in its own glass, the ‘koetsierglas’, with the convex bottom and wooden stand.Pauwel Kwak is distinctive from its inspiration, to the glass, to its taste, and is iconic for a reason. This is a definite must-try for anyone that enjoys Belgian beers.

De brouwerij staat al sinds 1791 fier overeind en is al die tijd in de familie gebleven die haar begon: zeven generaties brouwtraditie, en wat een succesvolle brouwers zijn het altijd geweest! Niet alleen schiepen zij grandioze bieren: zij hebben ons ook twee van de meest mooie en onderscheidende bierglazen ooit gemaakt gegeven. Van deze twee is het glas van Pauwel Kwak de bekendste – niet de mooiste. Het verhaal van Pauwel Kwak is al dikwijls verteld maar verveelt nooit. Hij was een herbergier in Dendermonde, een schrander man die het zijn klanten altijd naar de zin trachtte te maken. Zo bedacht hij voor zijn dagelijks passerende klandizie die de koetsen mende een speciaal glas, het koetsiersglas, opdat zij hun bok niet hoefden te verlaten, wat overigens van hun bazen ook helemaal niet mocht. Het glas konden zij gemakkelijk aan hun koets hangen en zelfs met hun dikke handschoenen aan konden zij het gemakkelijk vasthouden.

u kan een glas nog zo mooi zijn: als wat er in zit niet te hachelen is, blijft de klant toch weg. Over het bier van Pauwel had alleen niemand wat te klagen en dus liep het storm aan zijn uitspanning. Nog steeds is het bier, met een alcoholgehalte van 8% per volume en een diepe amberkleur, zeer gewild. Het spreekt dat het glas, dat bol aan de onderkant is en dus zonder de houten houder niet zomaar op tafel kan staan, hieraan nog steeds bijdraagt. We hebben allemaal wel eens gezien dat iemand het glas voor het eerst te drinken kreeg en bij het bereiken van het bolletje de bijna laatste teug te lichtzinnig nam, het bier over zich heen kreeg en zich daarna de klappen op de schouder en jolijt alom blozend liet welgevallen.

Dans la même famille depuis plus de 200 ans, la brasserie a été dirigée par sept générations de la famille Bosteels, brassant certaines bières les plus emblématiques de la Belgique ! Parmi celles-ci figurent des classqieus telles que Tripel Karmeliet et l'exquise Deus Brut des Flandres, une bière d'orge brassée dans le style champagne. Toutes sont brassées avec le même soin et la même attention qu'à l'origine. Conçue à l'origine comme un breuvage pour les cochers congelés, et traditionnellement servie dans son verre original du cocher, la Kwak est l'une des bières les plus iconiques de Belgique. Versée dans son verre, elle nous évoile une robe ambrée avec une tête blanche et moelleuse. Cette somptueuse belgian Strong Ale dégage des arômes de malt au caramel, avec des abricots séchés et de la prune, pour une note séduisante de sucre de demerara. Avec un équilibre doux et amer dans un corps lisse et pissant, la Kwak offre de délicieuses saveurs d'abricot, de malt et de prune, associées à la banane, la réglisse et la pomme verte. L'expérience de dégustation se termine par une finale épicée et sucrée. La Belgique est sans doute le temple spirituel de la bière, avec une longue tradition de brassage entre ses bières d'Abbaye et ses bières monastiques. Néanmoins, l'un des styles belges les plus célèbres qu'est la Belgian Strong Ale trouve ses origines dans des brasseries familiales telles que Bosteels et moortgat. Le style est difficile à cerner, allant de la couleur pâle à sombre avec un profi houblonné qui varie du subtil au fruité affirmé. Elle sont souvent brassées avec du sucre candi pour augmenter la teneur en alcool sans pour autant y ajouter du corps. La température idéale de dégustation pour la Kwak est situé entre 8 et 10°. Il est conseillé d'allier cette bière Kwak avec des fromages crémeux et mûrs ou encore avec du poulet rôti, du jambon fumé ou des ragoûts. Vous sentirez un arôme délicatement fruité et malté, au caractère légèrement épicé (coriandre, houblon).
Ensuite, vous découvrirez des arômes quelque peu terreux et très subtils de bananes et peut-être aussi un soupçon d'ananas ou de mangue en arrière-plan. Découvrez une amorce très douce, fruitée, une fermeté rappelant celle du nougat, un caractère légèrement épicé aux touches de réglisse, qui évolue vers une fin de bouche rappelant la saveur de la banane caramélisée. L'amertume reste toujours en arrière-plan, mais elle ressort agréablement à la fin.

Pauwel Kwak, Belgian Strong Ale

In Napoleon's time, Pauwel Kwak was a brewer and the owner of the 'De Hoorn' inn in Dendermonde. Mail coaches stopped there every day. But at that time coachmen were not allowed to leave their coach and horses in order to have their thirst quenched along with their passengers. As a result, the inventive innkeeper had a special Kwak glass blown that could be hung on the coach. In this way, the coachman had his Kwak beer safely at hand.

LOOK:
Kwak is recognisable by its deep bright amber colour and a dense, creamy coloured head. The pale wood of the glass holder makes a pleasant contrast with the beer.

SMELL:
You will smell a mellow, fruity and malty aroma with a slightly spicy character (coriander, hops). Additional earthy and very subtle aromas of banana and perhaps also a whiff of pineapple or mango in the background.

TASTE:
Discover a very mellow, fruity attack, a nougat-like solidity, and a slightly spicy character with hints of liquorice passing into a warm finish that reminds you of caramelised banana. The bitterness always remains in the background but in the end, emerges delicately.
