Description

Rustic Lager Beer is an easy-drinking lager brewed with the heritage barley variety Plumage Archer, plus spelt and wheat. Hopped with German Tettnag, Hallertau Blanc and Ariana. Dry with a tart note on the finish.

Newbarns say “The hops were all added hot side, and all came from Locher in Germany and were a mix of Tettnang, Ariana and Hallertau Blanc, some of my favourites we use here all the time at Newbarns.

“In addition to these whirlpool hops, I added 10% Bere malt lager, which had been ageing in stainless with Brettanomyces strains for over a vear to give the beer added complexity and as a nod to the Brett lager at our launch party in 2019. This was carefully added to the whirlpool and held at a temperature to kill off the wild yeast in the beer but not so hot as to drive off aromatics from the hops.

“Finally the beer was fermented without chilling with our house lager strain, then chilled, and lagered for a couple of weeks before centrifuging to produce a lager with just the slightest of haze, and a steady pile of white foam.

“A beer designed not to be discussed or revelled over, but to drink. But if you want to mull over it, more power to you.”
