Traditionally, the dialect term "scrumpy" was used to refer to what was otherwise called "rough", a harsh cider made from unselected apples. Today the term is more often used to distinguish locally made ciders produced in smaller quantities and using traditional methods, from mass-produced branded ciders.

Today, Gwynt Y Ddraig is one of the largest and most respected cider producers in Wales, with a reputation for crafting premium ciders using traditional methods.Gwynt Y Ddraig offers a wide variety of ciders, including still, sparkling, and fruit-flavoured varieties. The company uses only locally-sourced apples, many of which are grown on their own orchards or sourced from neighboring farms. Gwynt Y Ddraig is committed to sustainability and uses environmentally-friendly farming practices to grow their apples.The cider-making process at Gwynt Y Ddraig is a combination of traditional and modern methods. The company uses a state-of-the-art press to extract the juice from the apples, but then ferments the juice in oak barrels to give the cider a unique, complex flavor profile.
