Porter aus dem Hause Guinness

Back in the early 1800s, the Guinness brewers were faced with a challenge: how do we keep our beer fresh on long sea voyages to distant drinkers? If you haven’t heard, Guinness brewers love a challenge, so they put their ingenious heads together and purposely brewed a beer containing extra hops, acting as a natural preservative.

Did it work? Of course, it did! In fact, the recipe worked so well, the rich and characterful porter was quickly shipped to the Caribbean, America, Africa and Southeast Asia.

Aroma: Toffee caramel with slight chocolate notes

Appearance: Ruby red with a frothy head

Taste: Complex but smooth and mellow with a sweet, chocolate flavour

La Guinness West Indies Porter è una birra che si ispira alla ricetta orignale del 1801, ideata da Guinness per l’esportazione nelle Indie Occidentali. Per poter arrivare a destinazione dopo settimane di navigazione, i birrai di Guinness decisero di preservare la birra aggiungendo più luppolo. Oggi la West Indies Porter è una birra molto piacevole, simile all’originale ma con una finitura più fresca grazie alla fermentazione più rapida. Dal colore rubino, quasi scuro, e dotata di una schiuma compatta, la West Indies Porter è caratterizzata da sentori di cioccolato e caffè, che si ripresentano in bocca uniti al caramello ed equilibrati sapientemente dal luppolo. E’ una birra saporita e complessa, con un finale fresco, capace di sorprendere anche i puristi più diffidenti.

La porter è una birra classica anglosassone di colore scuro, nata nel ‘700 e riscoperta tra gli anni 70 e 80 del novecento grazie ai piccoli birrifici artigianali. La Porter da esportazione è in genere più robusta e luppolata, per poter affrontare la meglio i lunghi viaggi.

Al successo di Guinness contribuiscono anche le celebri campagne pubblicitarie degli anni 30 e 40 e il legame del brand irlandese con la società attuale.

Guinness produce in primis stout e porter, olter ad alcune birre chiare di buona fruizione. Il marchio di Dublino è esportato in tutto il mondo.

Beschrijving Brouwerij Guinness

Arthur Guinness was de eerste in een lange rij Guinness Master Brewers en het ambacht van het brouwen bij de St. James’s Gate Brewery werd van generatie op generatie doorgegeven. Arthur zelf heeft zijn passie voor brouwen hoogstwaarschijnlijk ontwikkeld van zijn vader, Richard, van wie werd gezegd dat hij de leiding had over het brouwen op het landgoed Celbridge van Dr. Arthur Price, later aartsbisschop van Cashel.

Op 31 december 1759 tekende de man een huurcontract van NEGENDUIZEND JAAR voor de St. James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin. Als dat geen geloof is, weten we het ook niet meer. En nu kunnen we zien dat zijn geloof een visioen was. Een visioen dat hij zag voordat iemand van ons zelfs maar geboren was. Zijn ondernemerszin lag op een ander niveau.

Als je de omslag van een Iers paspoort ziet, zie je niets anders dan een harp. Het is het officiële nationale embleem van Ierland. Je zult de harp ook op Ierse munten opmerken. Als je in Ierland iemand een munt ziet opgooien, hoor je hem misschien zelfs ‘Heads or Harps?’ roepen in plaats van ‘Heads or Tails’.

Guinness West Indies Porter entstand Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts aus der Herausforderung, ein Bier für lange Seereisen frisch zu halten. Die Guinness-Brauer, bekannt für ihre Innovationsfreude, entwickelten ein Bier mit zusätzlichem Hopfen, der als natürliches Konservierungsmittel diente. Das Ergebnis war so erfolgreich, dass dieses reichhaltige und charaktervolle Porter schnell seinen Weg in die Karibik, nach Amerika, Afrika und Südostasien fand. Guinness West Indies Porter besticht durch seinen intensiven Geschmack und seine geschichtsträchtige Entstehung, die es zu einem besonderen Genuss macht.

Guinness West Indies Porter heeft een ronde bitterheid, die afkomstig is van de gebrandheid van de mout. Associaties met chocolade en koffie zijn snel gemaakt. Ondanks de donkerheid is dit geen zwaar bier. Met 6% alcohol en de stevige smaak is dit een goede begeleider van vleesgerechten, maar ook bij desserts met roomijs.
