Zulogaarden Torxa is a complex Smoked American IPA that masterfully balances campfire smoke with vibrant hop character. The foundation of Pilsner and rich Maris Otter malts, enhanced by the toasty notes of Vienna malt, provides a sturdy platform for the beechwood-smoked Rauch malt. This smoky veil intertwines with a bold hop profile featuring Chinook, Amarillo, and Simcoe, delivering layers of pine resin and citrus. The addition of Nelson Sauvin introduces unique nuances of crushed gooseberry and white grape. Though assertive, the bitterness is tempered, allowing the fruity esters and savory smoke to linger harmoniously on the palate through a dry, warming finish.
Appearance. Deep golden to light amber (8-11 SRM). Clear with a slight haze. Persistent, off-white, medium-sized head with excellent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring pine resin, citrus zest, and tropical fruit notes of gooseberry and melon. A distinct but complementary moderate smoky character is present, supported by a low, toasty, grainy malt background with a clean fermentation profile.
Taste. Initial impression is a blend of resinous pine and citrus from the Chinook and Simcoe, followed by the stone fruit character of Amarillo. A clean, moderate-high bitterness provides balance. The Rauch malt adds a campfire smoke flavor that integrates with the bready Maris Otter and Vienna malt base. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering fruity and smoky aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Moderate to medium-high carbonation. A gentle, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present at 7.5% ABV, with no astringency.
