This massive Imperial Stout delivers a profound sensory experience defined by its maturation in Ardbeg barrels. The aroma is an intense fusion of heavy peat smoke, medicinal iodine, and charcoal, layered over a base of dark chocolate and espresso. On the palate, the 17% ABV manifests as a significant, velvety warmth that carries flavors of rich prunes, black currants, and licorice. The Ardbeg influence provides a lingering salty, smoky finish that complements the deep, roasted malt bitterness. Despite its staggering strength, the mouthfeel remains luscious and chewy, showcasing a complex, vinous character typical of high-gravity Belgian-influenced stouts.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. Pours with a thin, creamy, deep-tan head that fades to a persistent ring. High viscosity is evident through thick, oily legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominated by Islay scotch notes of peat smoke, bonfire embers, and a hint of medicinal brine. Supporting these are rich layers of dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and dark fruit esters like dried figs and raisins. Noticeable but smooth alcohol.
Taste. Explosive initial impression of bittersweet chocolate and charred grain. The mid-palate reveals complex Ardbeg barrel traits—earthy peat, sea salt, and smoked oak. Dark fruit flavors of plum and black cherry provide a sweet counterpoint to the firm roasted bitterness. The finish is long, warming, and slightly vinous with a hint of tar.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and exceptionally chewy; nearly syrupy in its viscosity. Carbonation is low. Significant alcohol warmth is present but integrated, providing a soothing, slow-sipping experience without being harsh or solventy.
