The sensory journey begins with deep caramel and dark fruit foundations, quickly overtaken by intense layers of chimney smoke, tar, and medicinal phenols reminiscent of Vishnevsky ointment. This 9.5% ABV ale balances its chewy, full-bodied malt depth against a distinctive iodized finish. While English hops provide a foundational bitterness, they are secondary to the lingering, astringent, and peat-like phenolic character that defines this complex, warming, and highly aromatic wintertime sipper.
Appearance. Deep copper to dark mahogany with ruby highlights (16–22 SRM); displays a small, creamy, off-white head with moderate retention. Brilliant clarity is evident upon pouring, while high viscosity is visible through slow-moving legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex interplay between rich caramel and toffee malt and aggressive phenolic notes of chimney smoke, railroad ties, and tar. Deep dark-fruit esters of raisin and dried fig are present, accompanied by a medicinal, ointment-like quality and a soft, rounded alcohol warmth.
Taste. Initial impression is a rich, bready, and multi-layered malty sweetness featuring caramel and biscuit. This is immediately countered by a bold smokiness and tarry, resinous notes.
