Zavod Lörts is a rich, cold-weather companion that captures the essence of a traditional Baltic Porter. It presents a deep, layered malt profile where notes of Munich malt provide a sturdy toasted base, complemented by the smooth, non-burnt character of debittered dark malts. This foundation evokes flavors of dark chocolate, molasses, and a hint of licorice. Its 7.5% ABV offers a well-integrated, deceptive warmth that carries complex esters reminiscent of plums and prunes. The fermentation is exceptionally clean, allowing the interplay between malty sweetness and a dryish, coffee-inflected finish to shine without any harsh roasted edges.
Appearance. Dark reddish-copper to opaque dark brown (approx. 25–30 SRM). Features a thick, persistent tan-colored head with excellent retention. While opaque in the glass, it shows clarity and ruby highlights when held to light.
Aroma. High intensity aromatics of rich, toasty malt, caramel, and dark chocolate. Complex fruit esters suggesting raisins and black cherries are prominent. No hop aroma is present. The profile is smooth and sophisticated with a subtle, vinous alcohol presence and no burnt or acrid notes.
Taste. The initial impression is richly malty and sweet, transitioning into deep flavors of molasses and nutty toast. Mid-palate reveals a smooth, roasted flavor favoring coffee and licorice over burnt char. Bitterness is medium-low (approx. 25–30 IBU context), providing balance. The finish is dryish and long, leaving an aftertaste of dark dried fruits and mild cocoa.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full and exceptionally smooth. Carbonation is medium-high, providing a mouth-filling sensation that prevents the beer from feeling heavy or cloying. A gentle, well-aged alcohol warmth is noticeable but well-integrated.
