This Imperial Stout-based Spiced Beer offers a profound sensory experience dominated by the integration of Dark Woods Coffee. The pour is viscous and deep, releasing high-intensity aromas of fresh-ground espresso, dark chocolate, and charred malts. On the palate, the coffee provides an upfront roastiness that melds seamlessly with a luxurious, velvety body. Layers of black treacle, burnt sugar, and dried dark fruits emerge, supported by a firm bitterness and a warming alcohol presence. The finish is remarkably long and decadent, leaving a lingering impression of bittersweet cocoa and the earthy, specialty character of the Dark Woods beans.
Appearance. Opaque, ebony black (40+ SRM) with a thick, creamy, tan-colored head that shows excellent persistence and leaves dense lacing.
Aroma. High intensity. Potent aromas of freshly roasted espresso and cold-brew coffee dominate. Supporting notes include rich dark chocolate, toasted bread crusts, and faint hints of plum and raisin. Hop aroma is very low, allowing the coffee and roasted malt complexity to lead.
Taste. Intense and multifaceted. Upfront flavors of concentrated coffee and bitter chocolate are balanced by a deep, malty sweetness reminiscent of molasses and caramel. A firm roasted bitterness provides structure, while the high alcohol content adds a pleasant spirituous depth. The finish is long and bittersweet with a persistent earthy coffee aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous, bordering on chewy. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the creamy, coating texture. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present, consistent with its 10.5% ABV, without being harsh or fusel.
