Veludo da Batata Doce is a luxurious Imperial Stout that highlights the farm-to-glass ethos of ZalaZ. The addition of estate-grown sweet potatoes alongside flaked oats creates a remarkably velvety, luscious texture that coats the palate. Deep layers of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and roasted grain dominate the sensory profile, balanced by a subtle, earthy depth derived from the potatoes. At 8.5% ABV, a smooth, integrated warmth emerges, supporting a complex array of dark fruit esters like dried figs and raisins. It finishes with a harmonious blend of roasted bitterness and a lingering, creamy richness that defines its indulgent character.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40 SRM). Pours with a thick, persistent deep tan head that leaves dense lacing on the glass. Visible viscosity suggests high gravity.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and roasted grain. Low to moderate esters of dark fruit like figs and raisins. A unique earthy, starchy sweetness is present from the sweet potatoes, accompanied by a clean, smooth alcohol warmth and very low herbal hop notes.
Taste. Initial impression is intensely roasty with flavors of dark chocolate, heavy coffee, and black licorice. A nutty, creamy malt character from the oats and sweet potatoes provides a softening counterpoint to the aggressive roasted bitterness. The finish is moderately sweet and lingering, with a complex aftertaste of charred grain and dark fruit.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A gentle, smooth warmth is noticeable but well-integrated, with no astringency despite the heavy roast.
