Evoking the stark, majestic depth of a 19th-century Imperial Stout, this historic recreation delivers an uncompromising, adjunct-free sensory experience. Nine months of patient tank maturation have melded its complex components into a seamless, bone-shaking whole. Prominent, luxurious dark chocolate, deeply caramelized cinder toffee, and whispers of sweet vanilla play against a background of intense dried fruits. Eschewing modern cloying trends, it asserts a highly bitter, dry finish powered by old world hops and a historic yeast culture. A clean but robust alcohol warmth radiates from its deeply roasted core, completing a classic, commanding profile.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. It pours with a thick, dense, persistent deep-tan head that leaves significant lacing. Due to its high viscosity and 12.5% ABV, prominent legs are visible when swirled.
Aroma. High in intensity with a complex blend of bittersweet dark chocolate, freshly roasted espresso beans, and caramelized cinder toffee. Moderate esters present as rich dried fruits, including dark raisins, prunes, and dried figs. Low herbal, earthy old world hop character is present, supported by a mild, clean, vinous alcohol warmth and a trace of natural vanilla.
Taste. The initial impression is intensely roasty and dry. Bitter dark chocolate and heavy espresso flavors dominate, supported by deep cinder toffee and a subtle touch of natural sweet vanilla. High hop bitterness and a dry finish frame the malt complexity, entirely cutting through any potential sweetness. Dark fruit esters of plums and black currants add complexity in the mid-palate. The finish is remarkably dry and clean for its strength, leaving a long, lingering aftertaste of roasted grains, earthy hops, and warming alcohol.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a velvety, chewy, and highly viscous texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, noticeable, and deeply comforting alcohol warmth is present but remains well-integrated, lacking any hot or sharp solvent characters.
