This Victorian-inspired Dark Mild revives a pre-taxation strength with a robust 5.7% ABV, presenting a deep mahogany profile. Utilizing heritage barley and highly kilned specialty malts, it delivers a complex sensory experience far richer than modern session versions. The aroma is a dense tapestry of caramel and dark sugars, while the palate unfolds with evocative notes of dried dark fruit and anise-like liquorice. Earthy, herbal hints of burdock root provide a unique botanical depth. Despite its strength, the finish remains balanced between sweet malt and a gentle, lingering roasted dryness, grounded by a traditional British malt character and brewing sugar depth.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown (22–25 SRM) with excellent clarity. Topped by a persistent, creamy, tan head that leaves moderate lacing on the glass.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity. Dominated by rich, toasted heritage barley and burnt sugar. Deep notes of black currant, plum, and dried fig are complemented by a distinct earthy, root-like burdock and spicy liquorice character. Very low floral hop presence.
Taste. Initial impression of sweet, dark caramel and bready malt. Mid-palate reveals complex layers of raisin, prune, and anise. Bitterness is low to moderate, serving only to balance the significant malt depth. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering earthy burdock and roasted grain aftertaste. No harshness from the dark grains.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body, notably richer and more viscous than modern session versions. Moderate carbonation. A soft, pleasant alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated. Smooth, with no roast-based astringency.
