This English Barley Wine offers a decadent sensory journey, shaped by eleven months of maturation in Spirit of Yorkshire casks. A deep mahogany pour reveals a complex tapestry of rich malt character, weaving together notes of dark toffee, treacle, and toasted bread. The extended barrel aging introduces sophisticated layers of vanilla, oak, and a smooth spirituous warmth that complements the beer’s inherent dark fruit esters of raisin and dried plum. On the palate, a lush, velvety sweetness is balanced by a soft, earthy hop presence and a lingering, vinous finish, making this an exceptional, contemplative winter sipper.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown (20-22 SRM) with distinct ruby highlights. Pours with a low, creamy off-white head that has modest retention. Brilliant clarity with visible viscosity and legs appearing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity of rich, bready malt, caramel, and toffee. Pronounced dark fruit esters of raisin, fig, and dried plum. Significant barrel influence from Spirit of Yorkshire casks, contributing vanilla, toasted oak, and a refined spirituous warmth. Low earthy and marmalade-like hop notes.
Taste. Initial impression is a massive, multi-layered malty sweetness featuring molasses, biscuit, and dark caramel. High dark fruit complexity persists through the mid-palate. Hop bitterness is moderate-low, providing just enough structure against the dense malt. The finish is moderately sweet and lingering, with complex vinous and oak-derived spirit flavors including vanilla and soft tannins.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied, chewy, and viscous with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. Significant alcohol warmth is present but smooth and well-integrated, lacking any harsh fusel burn.
