Limbo presents a formidable expression of an Imperial Stout, showcasing the raw, unadulterated power of a base beer designed to stand up to spirit barrels. It leads with an intense, midnight-black presence, offering a deep sensory dive into layers of bittersweet chocolate, espresso beans, and a whisper of molasses. Because it was packaged fresh rather than aged in whisky barrels, the roast profile is sharp and vibrant, complemented by a significant alcoholic backbone that provides a clean, warming embrace at 10.3% ABV. Subtle notes of dark fruit—dried figs and black currants—emerge as it warms, finishing with a resolute, roasty bitterness.
Appearance. Opaque, jet black (40 SRM). Pours with a dense, dark brown head that shows moderate retention and leaves viscous legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee, and light tar. Moderate esters of prunes and raisins are present, alongside a clean, noticeable alcohol warmth and very low earthy hop notes.
Taste. Intense initial impression of dark cocoa and espresso. The malt flavor is complex, featuring burnt grain, black licorice, and a supporting caramel sweetness. Medium-high bitterness balances the thick malt profile, leading to a long, roasty finish with a lingering bittersweet aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present but integrated, avoiding any harsh or solventy edges.
