HAL is a modern Double IPA that showcases a saturated hop profile through a massive dry-hop addition of Citra, Mosaic, and Strata. The sensory experience is led by intense notes of tropical mango, zesty pink grapefruit, and ripe passion fruit, supported by a subtle berry-like sweetness. The addition of milk sugar provides a rounded, velvety texture that softens the firm hop bitterness and complements the 8.3% ABV warmth. While staying true to the style’s strength, the lactose creates a creamy bridge between the resinous pine notes and the vibrant fruit character, resulting in a complex, full-bodied, and aromatic profile.
Appearance.Deep gold to light orange-copper (7-9 SRM) with a slight haze from heavy dry-hopping. Topped by a moderate-sized, persistent, creamy white head that leaves significant lacing.
Aroma.High-intensity aroma featuring a complex blend of tropical fruit (mango, passion fruit), citrus (grapefruit, tangerine), and a hint of strawberry-like sweetness. A clean, neutral malt backbone is present, alongside a faint, creamy sweetness from lactose and a light, well-integrated alcohol note.
Taste.Vibrant hop flavors of citrus and stone fruit dominate the palate, with Citra providing lime zest, Mosaic adding blueberry and earth, and Strata contributing dank tropical notes. Firm, moderately high bitterness is balanced by a subtle residual sweetness from milk sugar. The finish is medium-dry with a long, resinous, and fruity aftertaste.
Mouthfeel.Medium-full body with a smooth, creamy texture attributed to the milk sugar. Moderate carbonation provides enough lift to keep the beer from being cloying. Notable but restrained alcohol warmth is present without any harsh solvent character.
