Midnight Sun is a complex English Porter that balances traditional dark grains with a vibrant spice kick. Deep infusions of Chocolate Malt and Roast Barley provide a backbone of bittersweet cocoa and toasted coffee, while the addition of Oats lends a velvety smoothness to the palate. Earthy and herbal notes from Fuggles and First Gold hops provide a classic English counterpoint, which is then dramatically transformed by the inclusion of fresh root ginger. This spice creates a paradoxical warmth and snappy after-bite that cuts through the rich malt layers, finishing with a lingering, zesty spice and dark malt dryness.

Appearance. Opaque, dark brown to nearly black in color (30+ SRM). Features a moderate to thick, creamy tan head with good retention and persistent lacing.

Aroma. Moderately high intensity featuring dark chocolate and roasted coffee from the Chocolate Malt and Roast Barley. A distinctive spicy, zesty note of fresh root ginger is prominent, layered over the earthy, floral scents of Fuggles and First Gold hops. Subtle dark fruit esters are present in the background.

Taste. Initial flavors of rich cocoa and toasted biscuits transition into a smooth, creamy mid-palate influenced by the Oats. The fresh ginger provides a sharp, spicy bite that mingles with the moderate bitterness of the English hops. The finish is balanced between a lingering ginger heat and a clean, roasty dryness with hints of licorice and earthy Fuggles character.

Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a notable silkiness and creaminess from the oat addition. Carbonation is moderate. A very light alcohol warmth is present, though it is significantly enhanced by the natural heat of the root ginger.
