Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40 SRM). Pours with a thick, deep tan head that shows moderate retention. High viscosity is evident through visible legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and black licorice. Prominent barrel-aged character features bourbon-soaked oak, vanilla, and slight coconut. Low esters of prune and raisin are present, with a clean, warming alcohol presence and very low earthy hops.
Taste. Initial impression is intensely malty and sweet, followed by aggressive roasted flavors of cocoa and espresso. Mid-palate reveals complex barrel notes of toasted oak and caramel. Medium-high bitterness provides balance against the residual malt sugar. The finish is long and warming, with a lingering bittersweet chocolate and vinous dark fruit character.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present, without being sharp or solventy.
