This opulent Baltic Porter presents a sophisticated marriage of deep malt complexity and Caribbean influence. Aged in Belize rum barrels, the sensory profile leads with intense aromas of molasses, dark chocolate, and licorice, layered over a backdrop of vanilla and toasted oak. The palate is richly malty, featuring notes of toffee and Munich malt toastiness, balanced by a clean fermentation profile and dark fruit esters reminiscent of raisins and prunes. While the finish is dryish and smooth, the 10.5% ABV provides a significant, well-integrated warmth that complements the spicy rum character. Velvety and full-bodied, it offers a refined, non-burnt roasted elegance.
Appearance. Opaque dark brown with deep reddish-copper highlights; crowned by a thick, persistent tan head with fine lacing.
Aroma. High intensity of rich maltiness featuring caramel, molasses, and licorice. Complex alcohol and ester profile of plums and raisins, further enhanced by the Belize rum barrel influence providing notes of vanilla, spicy oak, and dark sugar. No hop aroma; clean fermentation character.
Taste. Initial malt sweetness gives way to a complex blend of deep toffee, dark chocolate, and nutty malt flavors. Prominent but smooth roasted coffee notes without any burnt harshness. Dark fruit esters of black currant and prune lead into a dryish finish. Bitterness is medium-low, providing just enough balance against the rich malt and rum-barrel sweetness. Clean aftertaste with lingering licorice and toasted oak.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally smooth with a creamy texture. Medium carbonation provides a mouth-filling sensation without heaviness. Significant, deceptive alcohol warmth from the high ABV and barrel aging.
