This Belgian Dark Strong Ale is a colossal expression of the style, pushing boundaries with its nearly 20% ABV. The sensory experience is dominated by an intense, bready-toasty malt base and deep layers of dark caramel. Robust Belgian yeast contributes a sophisticated tapestry of dark fruit esters, notably raisins, plums, and dried cherries, alongside subtle peppery phenols. Despite its massive strength, the alcohol presents as a perfumy, rose-like warmth rather than harsh solvent. The finish is decadent and lingering, balancing a rich malt sweetness with a hint of spicy complexity. It is a slow-sipping beast that rewards patience and cellaring.
Appearance. Deep coppery-brown (22 SRM). Dense, light tan-colored head with moderate retention, likely inhibited by the extreme alcohol content. Brilliant clarity.
Aroma. High intensity. Rich, bready-toasty malt character with deep caramel and toffee. Pronounced dark fruit esters of prune, fig, and dried cherry. Low to moderate spicy, peppery phenols and a significant, perfumy alcohol presence. Hops are not noticeable.
Taste. Massive malt richness with sweet caramel and dark fruit flavors of raisins and dates. Low bitterness, which allows the alcohol and malt to lead. Fermentation character includes black pepper phenols and complex esters. The finish is moderately sweet and very long, with a harmonious blend of spicy yeast and warming alcohol.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and creamy with a viscous texture. Moderate carbonation. Intense but smooth alcohol warmth that is not harsh or solvent-like. Very low astringency.
