This English Barley Wine presents a decadent, multi-layered sensory journey, amplified by its time in Whisky-Armagnac barrels. The pour reveals a viscous, mahogany liquid with slow-moving legs. Its aroma is dominated by concentrated dark fruits, specifically the sticky sweetness of sultanas and dates, intertwined with spirit-forward notes of oak and grape. On the palate, a luxurious, chewy texture carries flavors of rich toffee and biscuit malt, quickly followed by the vinous depth of Armagnac and a whisper of peaty Whisky. At 13% ABV, a smooth, pervasive warmth anchors the complex, lingering finish of this quintessential winter sipper.

Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown with ruby highlights. Low, off-white head with poor retention. Exceptional viscosity visible as thick, persistent legs on the glass.

Aroma. High intensity. Rich toffee and bready malt base layered with intense sultanas and dates. Notable spirituous character from Whisky and Armagnac barrels, including notes of vanilla, oak, and dried grape. Moderate vinous esters and light oxidative sherry-like notes.

Taste. Rich, multi-layered malty sweetness featuring toffee, biscuit, and caramel. Pronounced flavors of dates and sultanas provide a jammy depth. The barrel influence adds complexity with oaky tannins and a spirit-soaked fruit finish. Bitterness is low to moderate, providing just enough structure against the heavy residual sugar.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied, viscous, and distinctly chewy. Low carbonation. Significant, velvety alcohol warmth that is prominent but well-integrated, avoiding harshness or fusel burn.

Een vatgerijpte Barleywine, gebrouwen met toevoeging van sultana’s (oftewel gele rozijnen) en dadels, afgerijpt in Ierse Armagnac whisky vaten.

In de aanzet een matig zoete Barleywine.

Opvallen is de smaak van rozijnen, gedroogd fruit en dadels/pruimen.

De Armagnac vatrijping zit er zeker in en brengt het geheel mooi in balans.

Opgelet, door zijn eerder zoete aanzet laat dit bier zich erg gemakkelijk wegdrinken!
