The Horror is a formidable Imperial Stout that commands attention with its intense, multi-layered profile. At its core, a robust foundation of deeply roasted malts delivers decadent notes of dark chocolate and espresso, which are seamlessly intertwined with a profound, savory beech smoke character reminiscent of wood-fired grills. Despite its potent 11% ABV, the alcohol provides a smooth, integrated warmth rather than a sharp heat. Nuanced dark fruit esters—suggestive of dried figs and raisins—emerge as the beer warms, balancing the aggressive roast and the distinctive, smoky depth. It is a bold, complex, and harmonious expression of strength and soot.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque; pours with a thick, dense dark brown head that exhibits moderate retention. High viscosity is evident through slow-moving legs on the sides of the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and scorched grain. A prominent and savory beechwood smoke character dominates, evocative of grilled meats. Low dark fruit esters of prune and raisin are present, alongside a smooth, clean alcohol presence and very low earthy hops.
Taste. An intense initial impression of roasted malts and heavy smoke. Flavors of black licorice, cocoa, and toasted bread are layered with a significant savory smoke profile. Bitterness is firm and medium-high, balancing the malt sweetness to prevent a cloying character. The finish is long and bittersweet, trailing off with lingering notes of cold campfire and dark fruit.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant but gentle alcohol warmth is noticeable in the throat, contributing to the beer's substantial presence without being harsh.
