This collaborative Imperial Stout presents a decadent profile, merging deep roasted grains with the plush, aromatic sweetness of vanilla. An opaque jet-black pour yields aromas of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and rich vanilla bean, complemented by underlying notes of dried figs and raisins. The palate is intensely flavorful, where charred malt and cocoa collide with a creamy, dessert-like vanilla character. A firm bitterness provides structural balance against the significant malt weight, leading to a long, warming finish. The velvety, full-bodied texture highlights the high alcohol integration, creating a complex and harmonious sensory experience that balances dark roast with smooth, sweet accents.

Appearance. Opaque, jet black (SRM 40+) with a dense, persistent deep tan head. High viscosity is evident through slow-forming legs on the glass.

Aroma. High intensity; rich blend of dark chocolate, heavily roasted coffee, and prominent, sweet vanilla bean. Esters of dark fruits like prunes and raisins are noticeable. A clean, smooth alcohol warmth is present without being solventy.

Taste. Initial impression of rich, bittersweet chocolate and creamy vanilla. Deeply roasted malt flavors provide a sturdy backbone of coffee and charred grain. Hop bitterness is moderate to firm but balanced by significant malt sweetness. The finish is long and complex, lingering with roast, dark fruit, and a pleasant alcohol warmth.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, noticeable alcohol warmth coats the palate without any harshness or astringency.

Mede-oprichters Alan en Alex ontmoetten elkaar toen ze samenwerkten bij een Ierse brouwerij. Alex, een thuisbrouwer met een paar stappen in het professionele brouwen via verschillende eerdere projecten, en Alan, een operations manager die een paar lange periodes bij grote brouwerijen achter de rug heeft. Bij de brouwerij ging het werk in een razend tempo, en Alex en Alan wilden het wat rustiger aanpakken met specials en eenmalige bieren. Om dit te doen, richtten ze Whiplash op als hun eigen bedrijf en brachten ze in het eerste jaar een paar biertjes uit voor een geweldige ontvangst.
