Fatal Deviation is a purist’s Imperial Stout, eschewing modern adjuncts for a raw exploration of roasted grains. At 10% ABV, it presents a formidable profile of burnt toast, espresso-like bitterness, and dark chocolate, all derived solely from a complex malt bill. The absence of vanilla or cocoa allows deep, vinous dark fruit esters—reminiscent of raisins and dried plums—to shine alongside a firm, resinous hop backbone. This is a visceral, unadulterated stout that celebrates the interplay between aggressive char and velvety malt sweetness, finishing with a lingering, warming complexity that honors the traditional roots of the style.

Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40 SRM). Pours with a thick, dense, dark tan head that shows moderate retention and leaves viscous legs on the glass, indicative of its high alcohol content.

Aroma. High intensity with a dominant profile of heavily roasted grain, espresso, and bittersweet chocolate. Supporting notes of black licorice, tar, and slightly burnt currants emerge as it warms. Low earthy hop character and moderate esters of prune and raisin are present, backed by a clean, smooth alcohol presence.

Taste. An intense initial impression of charred malt and dark chocolate. The mid-palate reveals layers of toasted bread, coffee grounds, and a vinous dark fruit complexity. Bitterness is firm and aggressively high, balancing the significant malt sugars. The finish is long and bittersweet, lingering with notes of roasted grain, cocoa, and a well-integrated alcohol warmth.

Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and chewy with a velvety, luscious, and coating texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, providing just enough lift to the viscous body. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present without being harsh.
