Whiplash’s Dark Steering is a refined Schwarzbier that masterfully balances classic German lager precision with elegant malt depth. A foundation of German Munich malt provides a rich, doughy base, while the inclusion of Aromatic Malt amplifies the profile with notes of fresh-baked bread crust and subtle dark fruit. A restrained touch of Chocolate malt contributes a deep visual hue and soft roasted undertones without any acridity. Fermented with a clean lager treatment, the beer reveals nuanced hints of black cherry and sweet sponge cake. This brew offers a sophisticated, dry-finishing sensory experience that remains remarkably drinkable despite its dark, alluring appearance.

Appearance. Very dark brown to nearly black, showing deep ruby and garnet highlights when held to the light. It is topped by a dense, persistent, tight-knit tan head with excellent lacing. Clarity is brilliant, as expected from a properly conditioned lager.

Aroma. Moderate intensity featuring a rich bouquet of fresh bread crust emerging from the oven. Layered malty richness from Munich and Aromatic malts suggests notes of black cherry and a delicate hint of fairy cakes. Low roasted notes present as smooth dark chocolate, avoiding any burnt or coffee-like harshness. Fermentation character is exceptionally clean with no perceptible esters.

Taste. Initial impression is of smooth, toasted malt and bready Munich character. The mid-palate reveals dark cherry and light cocoa notes from the Chocolate malt. Bitterness is medium-low, providing just enough structure to balance the malt sweetness without becoming dominant. The finish is notably dry and clean, leaving a lingering, subtle roastiness and a hint of herbal hop character in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a soft, smooth texture aided by the use of soft water. Carbonation is moderate to moderately-high, contributing to a fluffy mouthfeel. No astringency or harsh roast bite is present; the alcohol is well-integrated with no noticeable warmth.
