West Sixth Brewing Amber Ale

West Sixth Brewing’s Amber Ale presents a classic American Amber Ale profile that leans into a rich, malt-forward core. The sensory experience is defined by a deep, biscuity malt backbone that provides a toasted foundation, complemented by layers of sweet caramel. These hearty malt notes are elegantly balanced by a moderate hop presence, delivering bright, fruity hop notes characteristic of New World varieties. The result is a harmonious interplay between the bread-like qualities of the biscuit malt and a clean, citrusy lift. It finishes with a smooth, lingering bitterness that cleanses the palate, making for a highly approachable and balanced pour.
Appearance. Deep copper to reddish-amber (approx. 14 SRM) with excellent clarity. It is topped by a moderately large, creamy off-white head that demonstrates good retention and leaves light lacing on the glass.
Aroma. Moderate aroma intensity featuring a primary toasty, biscuity malt character with supporting notes of medium caramel. This is joined by moderate fruity hop esters suggesting citrus and light stone fruit. The fermentation profile is clean with very low yeast-derived esters.
Taste. The initial impression is one of malty sweetness, quickly evolving into a dominant toasted biscuit and light caramel flavor. Hop flavor is moderate, mirroring the aroma's fruity and citrusy qualities. Bitterness is moderate (approx. 30-35 IBU), providing enough structure to balance the malt without becoming aggressive. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering note of toasted grain and soft hop resin.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate to high, providing a lively mouthfeel. At 5.5% ABV, there is a very light, well-integrated alcohol warmth and no perceptible astringency.

West Sixth’s Amber Ale presents a rich amber color in our glass, topped by a sizeable head of khaki foam. An engaging malt profile comes forth in the aroma right away, offering plenty of caramel and toasty, bready, biscuity character. The hops make their presence known as well, giving us a nice dash of lightly citric fruitiness atop the malty notes. Look for the story to continue much the same way in the flavor, too, as the malty core of this...
