Weekend Project Destination: Citra is a vibrant Hazy IPA that showcases the expressive potential of cold and heavy dry hopping. Utilizing fresh Citra Cryo, the sensory profile is dominated by intense layers of pink grapefruit, passion fruit, and bright tangerine. The selection of a traditional British ale yeast amplifies these tropical fruit notes while engineering a drier finish than typical for the style, enhancing its sessionability despite the 7.2% ABV. The beer maintains high drinkability with a soft, pillowy texture that carries pungent hop oils across the palate, presenting a luminous glow that balances modern hop intensity with classic yeast-driven complexity.
Appearance. Color is a luminous pale orange (5 SRM) with a thick, rocky, meringue-like white head that shows high retention. The beer is opaque with a healthy hazy shine, free of any visible yeast clumps or hop particulates.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring punchy pink grapefruit, mango, and lychee. A supportive bready and grainy malt backbone is present in the background. Moderate fruity esters from the British ale yeast complement the tropical hop profile, with a very subtle hint of clean alcohol warmth.
Taste. High to very high tropical fruit flavors, specifically passion fruit and citrus zest. The malt flavor is low but provides a soft, bready foundation. Perceived bitterness is moderate but smooth, lacking any harshness or hop burn. The finish is notably drier than many in the style, ending clean with a lingering citrus aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a soft, smooth, and pillowy texture. Carbonation is moderate. A light, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, but the beer remains highly drinkable without any astringency or raw starch mouthfeel.
