Wayward Brewing Double Passionista
This imperial take on a Berliner Weisse presents a vibrant, high-intensity sensory experience that celebrates summer with amplified fruit character. The aroma is immediately dominated by a sharp lactic sourness, intricately woven with the tropical punch of passionfruit and the distinct, citrus-floral brightness of yuzu. On the palate, a crisp, doughy wheat malt backbone provides a brief foundation for a puckering tartness. Despite the significantly elevated 7.6% ABV, the beer maintains a refreshing quality, concluding with a clean, semi-dry finish. The increased intensity of fruit and acidity creates a complex, lively profile that feels substantially larger than a traditional version while remaining impeccably balanced.
Appearance. Pale straw to light gold with a slight hazy tint from the fruit additions. Large, dense, white head with poor retention and light lacing, featuring high effervescence.
Aroma. High intensity with a dominant, sharply sour lactic character. Pronounced tropical passionfruit and floral, citrusy yuzu notes are prominent. A light, raw bread dough and sourdough malt character provides a soft background, complemented by fermentation esters of tart apple and peach. No hop aroma is present.
Taste. Clean, powerful lactic sourness dominates the initial impression, supported by a doughy, bready, and grainy wheat malt flavor. Intense, bright passionfruit and tart yuzu citrus flavors provide the primary balance, as hop bitterness is undetectable. The finish is semi-dry and crisp with a lingering, refreshing tartness and no hop flavor.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with very high, prickly carbonation. A subtle, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present due to the elevated strength. Crisp acidity provides a sharp but clean sensation on the palate without astringency.
