Wayfinder’s Original Cold IPA redefines the American IPA experience with a sharp, crystalline focus on hop expression. Fermented with an ultra-clean profile and filtered for maximum clarity, it presents a brilliant straw-gold hue. The sensory profile is dominated by a vibrant collision of old-school pine and resin alongside new-school tropical and citrus notes. A lean, cracker-like malt backbone provides a sterile canvas for the hop intensity to shine, leading to a bone-dry, snappy finish. This beer’s hallmark is its cold drinkability—highly carbonated and crisp, delivering a refreshing bitterness that lingers cleanly without weighing down the palate.
Appearance. Color is pale gold (6 SRM). Features a large, snowy-white head with excellent persistence and delicate lacing. Brilliantly clear and bright.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent pine, resinous spice, and bright citrus zest. Low, clean, grainy-sweet malt character provides a subtle background. Very clean fermentation profile with no discernible yeast esters.
Taste. High hop flavor of resinous pine and tropical fruit. Low, grainy malt flavor with a neutral character. Medium-high to high bitterness that is sharp but clean. Bone-dry finish with a lingering hoppy and bitter aftertaste. No harshness or astringency.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a crisp, smooth texture. High carbonation provides a prickly, refreshing sensation. Very light, well-integrated alcohol warmth.

Wayfinder The Original Cold IPA
We made the first Cold IPA called “Relapse IPA” in October 2018 in honor of Relapse Records 30th anniversary. We were trying to make something with the elements of West-Coast IPA but taken to the extreme. We wanted something drier with excessive hoppiness but a cleaner finish.
Frankly, we tried to make a style of beer that could showcase American hops in a new way. Cold IPA hits with a strong punch of aromatic hop intensity and high bitterness but finishes crisp and clean leaving the drinker craving another sip. It’s Wester than West Coast.
HOW IT’S MADE
Adjunct lager malt bill. 20-40% rice or corn mashed with all American two row pilsner malt. No caramel malts. Fermented to incredible dryness. 82-88% apparent degree of fermentation.
Lager yeast fermented warm. Quick fermenting yeast that throws low ester and low sulfur. Kölsch, Chico or California Common yeast could be substituted. It MUST not have high sulfur or high ester notes. Cold IPA is a canvas for IPA hops.
Dry hopped warm during spunding or krausening. This achieves bio-transformation while negating O2 pickup.
Filtered crystal clear and well-carbonated. Cold IPA is the anti-thesis of NEIPA.
Additional notes: Finish should exhibit low to medium-low body with a clean, crisp malt character evident at low levels. Up to 40% corn and/or rice in the grist should be used. These crisp and refreshing beers are fermented warm with lager yeast or cold with ale yeast.
