Waitoa Firstlight is a vibrant Hazy IPA that captures the essence of the New Zealand landscape through a potent blend of local hops. Highlighting Kōhatu and Nectaron, the beer leads with intense stone fruit and tropical punch, while Riwaka adds deep grapefruit and passionfruit layers. Subtle zesty notes of lime from Motueka and the signature white grape character of Nelson Sauvin provide a crisp finish against a soft, bready malt backdrop. The experience is incredibly lush and juicy, characterized by a velvety texture and restrained bitterness. It is a brilliant showcase of Aotearoa’s terroir, balancing complex fruit esters with high drinkability.
Appearance. SRM 4-6; glowing golden-orange with a persistent, dense, white meringue-like head leaving heavy lacing. Opaque, uniform haze with a healthy shine and no visible particulates.
Aroma. High intensity; dominant notes of ripe peach and nectarine from Nectaron combined with passionfruit and citrus zip from Riwaka. Undertones of crushed gooseberry from Nelson Sauvin and subtle lime zest from Motueka. Malt is low and bready, supporting the hop-forward profile without any caramel or toast.
Taste. Initial burst of tropical and stone fruit flavors mirroring the aroma. Moderate-low perceived bitterness provides structure without being sharp. Kōhatu contributes tropical fruit depth while Motueka brings a zesty citrus finish. Mid-palate shows soft, bready malt sweetness, transitioning to an off-dry, juicy aftertaste with lingering notes of white grape and passionfruit.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a soft, pillowy texture and smooth delivery. Moderate carbonation enhances the juicy sensation. No hop burn or astringency, accompanied by a light, well-integrated alcohol warmth.
