This Imperial Wee Heavy pours a deep mahogany with a rich, malty core defined by intense layers of caramel and toasted English biscuits. The thirteen-month maturation in Caol Ila and Bourbon barrels introduces complex overlays of charred oak and vanilla, punctuated by a distinctive maritime peat influence that provides a subtle seaweed-salinity. On the palate, the decadent malt base reveals nuanced notes of honeyed ginger and red berries, while the high ABV manifests as a smooth, integrated warmth. This is a profound, meditative ale where traditional Scottish malt depth meets the sophisticated, smoky character of Islay scotch.
Appearance. Deep dark brown with brilliant ruby highlights; pours with a dense, creamy tan head that shows moderate retention. Visible legs coat the glass, indicating high viscosity and alcohol content.
Aroma. High intensity malt aroma of burnt sugar, toffee, and toasted breadcrumbs. The barrel aging contributes distinct notes of peaty smoke, brine, and medicinal seaweed from the Caol Ila casks, balanced by honey, ginger, and subtle bourbon vanilla. Low dark fruit esters of plum and raisin are present.
Taste. Initial impression is deeply sweet and rich, dominated by caramelized sugar and chewy malt. Flavors of red berries and spicy ginger emerge mid-palate, supported by the bourbon-derived oak. The finish is long and warming with a hint of roasted grain and a lingering salty-sweet interplay. Hop bitterness is low, allowing the malt and barrel character to lead.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a thick, chewy, almost creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, lacking any harsh fusel edges.
