Vocation Brewery BA Imperial Porter

Porter 10.2 º
This Imperial Porter presents a complex tug-of-war between decadent barrel influences and a robust malt backbone. Eight months of aging in both bourbon and pinot noir barrels imparts a sophisticated profile where charred oak and sweet vanilla meet the vinous, tannic grace of red wine. The base beer provides a foundation of dark chocolate and light coffee notes, typical of an American Porter. Despite its high strength, the experience is marked by a surprising lightness of body that allows the interplay of spiritous warmth and dark fruit acidity to shine. It is a harmonious yet intense marriage of toasted grain and dual-barrel complexity.
Appearance. Very dark brown in color, nearing 40 SRM, with prominent deep ruby and garnet highlights when held to the light. It features a thick, tan-colored head with moderately good retention and fine lacing.
Aroma. High intensity aroma featuring a moderately strong roast character of chocolate and light coffee. Distinctive bourbon notes of sweet vanilla and caramel are balanced by a vinous, red fruit quality from the pinot noir barrels. Low earthy hops and moderate fruity esters suggestive of dark cherry are present.
Taste. Initial impression is a moderately strong roasted malt flavor, emphasizing chocolate and lightly burnt grain. The palate is dominated by a struggle between bourbon-soaked oak and tart red wine tannins. Medium bitterness provides balance, preventing the vanilla and caramel notes from becoming cloying. The finish is medium-dry with lingering hints of grape skin and charred wood.
Mouthfeel. Medium body, surprisingly lighter than expected for the high alcohol content. Carbonation is moderate. A noticeable, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, accompanied by a slight oak-derived tannin astringency that cleanses the palate.
