This decadent Foreign Extra Stout, a collaboration with Lervig, delivers a sophisticated sensory profile shaped by thirteen months in Burgundy barrels. The pour is near-opaque with a persistent tan head, releasing a complex bouquet where deep-roasted chocolate and coffee meet elegant vanilla and vinous red wine notes. The Belgian yeast strain introduces a layer of dark fruit esters and subtle peppery spice. On the palate, the rich malt foundation is balanced by a refined bitterness and oak-driven tannins, concluding with a lingering, warming finish of spice and dried fruit. It is a harmonious marriage of British dark beer tradition and Belgian-inspired complexity.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40 SRM) with a thick, dense, mocha-colored head that exhibits excellent retention and heavy lacing.
Aroma. High intensity aromatics featuring prominent dark chocolate and espresso roast. These are layered with distinct vanilla bean and toasted oak from the Burgundy barrels. Noticeable dark fruit esters of plum and black cherry are present alongside a subtle, spicy Belgian yeast phenol and a soft vinous character.
Taste. The initial impression is of rich, bittersweet chocolate and roasted grains without a sharp burnt edge. Mid-palate reveals complex barrel-derived notes of red wine, oak, and vanilla. A medium bitterness provides balance to the malt sweetness, while the finish is moderately dry with a lingering spicy, fruity aftertaste and a clean, warming alcohol presence.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and velvety with a smooth, creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate. A significant but well-integrated alcohol warmth spreads across the palate without being harsh or fusel.
