Vocation Brewery's Aoraki is a striking Double IPA that captures the essence of Southern Hemisphere terroir. It opens with an intense, bright rush of New Zealand hops, releasing a cascade of ripe passionfruit, sweet peach, and bruised mango aromas. This vibrant profile translates seamlessly to the palate, delivering juicy tropical and stone fruit flavors underpinned by a lean, unobtrusive malt foundation. An exceptionally soft bitterness provides a smooth, elegant finish, balancing the moderate warmth of its eight percent alcohol strength without any harshness. It is a highly drinkable and beautifully expressive strong ale.
Appearance.Pale gold to light orange-copper with a slight, acceptable haze from intensive dry-hopping. Crowned with a moderate-sized, persistent, frothy off-white head that leaves tight, sticky lacing on the glass.
Aroma.High to intense aroma dominated by vibrant New Zealand hop characteristics, featuring prominent notes of sweet peach, apricot, passionfruit, and a hint of white grape. Supported by a clean, neutral, and slightly bready malt character in the background with a subtle, smooth alcohol presence.
Taste. An initial burst of juicy tropical and stone fruits, including mango and nectarine. The malt flavor is low and softly supportive without any heavy caramel sweetness, leading to a dry, crisp aftertaste. Features a moderately high hop bitterness that finishes soft and clean, with a lingering hoppy fruitiness and no harshness.
Mouthfeel.Medium body with a smooth, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate to medium-high. Exhibits a clean, gentle alcohol warmth that is well-integrated, without any harsh hop-derived astringency.
