Vander Ghinste Roodbruin is a masterfully balanced Oud Bruin that showcases a deep mahogany hue and a complex interplay of flavors. The inclusion of caramelized malts provides a rich base of toffee and burnt sugar, while the addition of wheat ensures a smooth, supple texture. Blending with lambic aged in oak for 18 months introduces a refined, gentle lactic tartness and subtle woody tannins. Aromas of raisins, plums, and dates dominate, leading to a sweet-and-sour palate where dark fruit esters meet a soft, integrated acidity. It finishes with a refreshing brightness, perfectly reconciling its malty sweetness with a crisp, slightly tart edge.
Appearance. Deep reddish-brown with excellent clarity. Pours with a persistent, light tan head that exhibits good retention and fine lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high malt intensity featuring rich caramel, toffee, and treacle notes. Pronounced fruity esters of black cherry, plum, and raisin. A moderate, clean lactic sourness is present, complemented by a subtle oak-derived woodiness. Hop aroma is absent.
Taste. The initial impression is malty and sweet, dominated by caramel and burnt sugar flavors. This is quickly balanced by a moderate, smooth lactic tartness. Complexity is enhanced by notes of dried dark fruits like prunes and figs. Hop bitterness is very low and restrained. The finish is a harmonious sweet-and-sour blend that is clean and lacks any harsh acetic character.
Mouthfeel. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. It possesses a smooth, slightly creamy texture with no detectable astringency. The 5.5% alcohol provides a very light, well-integrated warmth.
