Van Moll Zeitgeist is an intriguing Imperial Black Weizen IPA that masterfully bridges styles. This dark, complex pour showcases a bold collision of yeast-driven banana and clove phenols with the sharp, resinous pine and tropical citrus of New World hops. Beneath this bright, hoppy layer, a smooth foundation of wheat and dehusked carafa malts provides a velvety body and highly restrained chocolate and coffee notes, devoid of harsh, burnt acridity. Warming yet drinkable, it delivers a high-contrast experience where the dry, bitter, and ester-forward finish harmonizes beautifully with a subtle, dark-roasted backdrop.
Appearance. Opaque, deep dark brown to near-black color. Pours with a thick, long-lasting, creamy tan head that leaves dense lacing. High carbonation is visible through a pillowy, persistent foam structure.
Aroma. High intensity. A complex aromatic interplay of ripe banana, sweet clove, and spicy bubblegum esters from the weizen yeast, closely followed by dominant notes of citrusy grapefruit, pine resin, and tropical passion fruit hops. Very low roast malt character, presenting as subtle dark chocolate and toasted wheat in the background, with a clean, warm ethanol presence.
Taste. Initial impression is a burst of vibrant tropical and citrus hop flavors accompanied by expressive banana and spicy clove yeast phenols. The malt profile is medium-low, contributing smooth, bready wheat and soft, de-bittered chocolate notes without any harsh, burnt, or ashy acridity. Bitterness is firm and high but not abrasive, leading to a dry, slightly warming, and lingering finish where spicy hop oils and soft cocoa-like roast persist.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a remarkably creamy, velvety texture from the high wheat content. Moderate-high carbonation provides a lively effervescence that balances the weight. A noticeable, smooth alcohol warmth is present but integrated, with no astringency.
