Melange is a sophisticated Brett Beer that showcases the elegance of a twelve-month slumber in Pinot Noir barrels. On the nose, a vibrant bouquet of mixed fruit and dark berries intermingles with the delicate, earthy funk of Brettanomyces, offering notes of wet hay and aged leather. The palate reveals a complex layering of vinous red wine character, dried currants, and a subtle oak tannin that provides structure. Effervescent and bone-dry, the finish is crisp with a lingering whisper of wild fermentation and stone fruit. It beautifully balances the rustic soul of a wild ale with the refined, tannic grace of French oak.
Appearance. Deep ruby to burnished copper with a slight haze from fruit and wild yeast. The head is moderate, off-white to pale pink, with fair retention and fine lacing.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominated by dark berry esters and vinous red wine notes from the Pinot Noir barrels. Secondary aromas include earthy Brett funk—barnyard and wet hay—tempered by toasted oak and a light vanillin. Hop aroma is absent.
Taste. Initial impression is bone-dry and fruit-forward. Rich flavors of cherry, plum, and mixed berries collide with wood-derived tannins and a peppery Brett character. Malt is minimal, providing a light cracker-like base. Hop bitterness is very low, allowing the mild wild acidity and oak tannins to provide balance. The finish is long, dry, and complex with a lingering vinous aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with high carbonation that creates a prickly, refreshing sensation. A light warming sensation from the alcohol is present. Notable wood tannin provides a slight, pleasant astringency.
