This Belgian Dark Strong Ale from Unibroue presents a masterclass in complexity, marrying the brewery’s signature spicy yeast with deep, decadent malts. The 10.5% ABV is masterfully integrated, manifesting as elegant Madeira-like oxidation and smooth warmth. On the nose, intense aromas of dark fruits like plums and raisins mingle with a subtle roasted malt character and spicy black pepper phenols. The palate is treated to a rich tapestry of figs and dates, balanced by a sophisticated, vinous finish. Effervescent carbonation lifts the full-bodied texture, ensuring this potent ale remains graceful from the first sip to the lingering, dark-fruit-laden aftertaste.
Appearance. Deep coppery-brown to dark mahogany in color with a slight haze from being on lees. It is crowned by a huge, dense, moussy light-tan head with exceptional persistence and lacing.
Aroma. High intensity and deeply complex. A bready, toasty malt base is layered with subtle roasted notes and significant dark fruit esters of raisin, plum, and dried cherry. A sophisticated vinous character reminiscent of Madeira is present, alongside spicy black pepper phenols and a soft, perfumy alcohol presence.
Taste. Rich and multifaceted, the initial impression is one of bready malt and dark caramel. Mid-palate flavors of fig, date, and prune emerge, accompanied by light vanilla and peppery spice. Despite the initial malt richness, the finish is moderately dry with a lingering note of dark fruit and a hint of roasted grain. Bitterness is medium-low, providing just enough balance to the alcohol and malt.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a creamy, luxurious texture. Carbonation is high and lively but not sharp. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth provides a comforting, digestive-like quality without being solventy or harsh.
