Sacred Gate is a powerful Double IPA that captures an intense sensory experience through its 'Fancy Triple IPA' architecture. The inclusion of oats provides a lush, velvety foundation for an aggressive hop profile. Distinctive Citra and Cryo Citra hops drive bold notes of orange and grapefruit, while Galaxy contributes layers of ripe passionfruit. The addition of Nelson Sauvin and Motueka CGX adds sophisticated nuances of white grape and lime zest. Despite its high 9.5% alcohol content, the beer maintains a smooth, saturated hop character that balances firm bitterness with a clean, tropical-forward finish typical of modern aromatic brewing.
Appearance. Deep gold to pale orange (SRM 6–8). The beer displays a significant, creamy white head with excellent persistence and a heavy, opaque haze resulting from the high oat content.
Aroma. Intensity is high, featuring a complex blend of passionfruit, crushed gooseberry, and bright lime. Prominent citrus notes of grapefruit and orange from Citra are supported by a neutral, grainy malt background and a clean fermentation profile with very low alcohol warmth.
Taste. The initial impression is a burst of tropical and citrus fruit flavors, specifically passionfruit, lime zest, and white grape. Malt flavor is low but provides a soft, bready support. Bitterness is firm and moderately high, yet smooth and devoid of harshness. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering, resinous hop aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a creamy, silky texture enhanced by the use of oats. Carbonation is moderate. A well-integrated, smooth alcohol warmth is present, consistent with its strength, without any astringency.
