This Foreign Extra Stout offers a luxurious, sensory-driven experience defined by its deep roasted malt profile. Smooth chocolate notes lead the palate, sourced from a complex blend of roasted grains that provide a firm yet balanced bitterness. The generous use of Columbus and Fuggles hops adds an assertive layer of earthy, herbal, and slightly resinous depth, countering the rich malt sweetness. At 8.2% ABV, the beer exhibits a sophisticated, well-integrated alcohol warmth that enhances its medium-full body. The result is a bold, dark ale that finishes moderately dry with lingering impressions of dark cocoa and toasted grain.
Appearance. Opaque, very deep brown to jet black in color (approx. 38-40 SRM). It is topped by a large, persistent tan head with excellent retention and thick lacing.
Aroma. High intensity of dark chocolate and heavily roasted coffee beans. Low to medium esters suggesting dried dark fruits like plum. The hop character is low to moderate, presenting earthy and herbal notes from the Fuggles and a faint resinous touch from the Columbus. A clean, subtle alcohol warmth is present.
Taste. Moderate to high roast flavors of unsweetened chocolate and burnt grain, lacking any harsh or acrid bite. The bitterness is medium-high, providing a firm balance against the malt. Mid-palate flavors include earthy and herbal hop notes. It features a moderately dry finish with a lingering roasted aftertaste and a hint of dark cocoa.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full to full body with a notably smooth and creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate to moderately high. A noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, providing a gentle glow without being hot or solventy.
