Troon Brewing Secondhand Casket

This decadent English Barley Wine presents a masterful fusion of traditional British malt depth and extravagant conditioning. Extensive aging for eighteen months in bourbon barrels imbues the beer with deep oak character and spirituous warmth, while the addition of dulce de leche provides a rich, caramelized sweetness. The sensory profile is further elevated by a triple-threat of vanilla: the bold, creamy notes of Ugandan vanilla beans, the spicy nuances of Mexican vanilla beans, and the classic, marshmallow-like sweetness of Madagascar vanilla beans. Together, they create a viscous, dessert-like experience that respects the style's dark fruit foundations while pushing into indulgent territory.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown (18–22 SRM) with rich ruby highlights. The pour produces a low, tan head with minimal retention and a thin collar, exhibiting visible viscosity and thick legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex layering of dulce de leche and aromatic vanilla. Strong malt notes of toffee and dark fruit—raisin and fig—intermingle with bourbon-soaked oak, toasted coconut, and a soft, rounded alcohol presence. Very low earthy hop character.
Taste. Initial impression is intensely sweet and malty, featuring flavors of caramelized sugar, biscuit, and rich toffee. The Ugandan, Mexican, and Madagascar vanilla beans provide a multi-dimensional creaminess that dominates the mid-palate. Bourbon barrel aging adds depth through charred oak and vanilla tannins, which help balance the residual sugar. Bitterness is low to moderate, primarily serving to prevent the finish from being cloying. The finish is long and lingering, filled with notes of dark fruit and spirituous warmth.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied, chewy, and exceptionally viscous with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present, consistent with its high strength, without being harsh or fusel.
