This Double IPA showcases a sophisticated marriage of New Zealand and American hop influences, utilizing a heavy dose of Citra, Rakau, and the specialized "The Bruce" blend featuring Nelson Sauvin and Motueka. An extended maturation period refines the experience, layering dank resins against a vivid tropical core. Initial sensations of bright lime and succulent mango dominate the palate, supported by a clean, restrained malt backbone. The sensory profile evolves from a deep, herbal dankness into a refreshing citrus finish. Despite its strength, the beer maintains a remarkable balance, offering a nuanced bitterness that integrates seamlessly with its plush, juicy character.
Appearance. Deep gold to light orange (7–9 SRM); thick, creamy, persistent white head with significant lacing; opaque with a heavy haze characteristic of a double dry-hopped style.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring a complex blend of lime zest, ripe mango, and passion fruit. Distinctive white grape notes from Nelson Sauvin and crushed pine needles contribute to a resinous, dank background. Low grainy-sweet malt and light fruity fermentation esters are present but secondary.
Taste. Initial impression is a burst of tropical fruit and citrus oil. Strong flavors of mango and lime juice are supported by a soft, bready malt foundation. Mid-palate introduces a flavorful, herbal dankness and a firm, moderately high bitterness that avoids harshness. The finish is medium-dry and clean with a lingering aftertaste of stone fruit and resin.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a soft, silky texture. Moderate carbonation provides a gentle lift. A smooth, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present without being hot. Negligible hop-derived astringency.
